Most freelancers guess what to write about. They pick topics that sound good, publish, and hope clients notice. There is a better way, and it is sitting in your own website data: the exact questions your future clients are already typing into Google.

If you run a blog, a portfolio site, or any site with even a little search traffic, Google Search Console records every query that showed your pages. A single regex filter pulls out just the questions — and every one of them is a potential paid article, portfolio piece, or client pitch with proven demand behind it.

In Search Console, open Performance, then Search results. Click Add filter, choose Query, then Custom (regex), and paste this pattern:

It keeps only queries that start with a question word. The \b at the end is a word boundary, which stops false matches like "whatsapp" for "what." Then sort the results by impressions, highest first. What you are looking at is a demand list, ranked by how often each question was searched.

First, portfolio pieces. Pick a question with solid impressions in your niche and write the best answer to it on your own site. When a client asks for samples, you are not showing random writing — you are showing an article that answers a question real people search for, on a page that is already getting impressions.

Second, pitches with proof. Instead of cold-emailing "I write content," you can say: "I noticed hundreds of people search for how to price logo design each month, and I wrote a guide that answers it." Demand is a much stronger pitch than talent alone, and a screenshot of your Search Console filter is the evidence.

Third, service pages that sell while you sleep. If clients keep asking you the same questions — about pricing, timelines, deliverables — check whether searchers ask them too. A clear FAQ or service page answering those questions ranks, gets found, and pre-answers objections before a sales call even starts.

The sweet spot is questions where your page sits around position 8 to 20 with decent impressions. You are already relevant; you just are not winning yet. A sharper title, a direct answer in the opening paragraph, and a worked example are often enough to push those pages onto page one, where the clicks actually happen.

One honest caveat: this trick needs some existing traffic to work with. If your site is brand new and Search Console is nearly empty, publish a handful of solid posts first, then come back in a few weeks — the questions will be waiting. And remember the data runs a few days behind, and very rare queries are hidden, so treat the list as a strong sample, not a complete census.

Stop brainstorming topics from nothing. Your future clients have already written your content calendar in the form of their questions — this filter just lets you read it.
