Small shops do not need a design agency; they need someone who can make a decent menu, a sale poster, a price list or a social media graphic this week. That is the freelance graphic design market open to beginners: practical, small, repeat work made with free design tools. You do not need a degree or expensive software — you need an eye for clean layout, a small portfolio, and the habit of delivering on time.

Focus on work with obvious value to the buyer. A café needs a menu board that customers can read from three metres away. A salon needs a price list and a booking graphic. A trades business needs a simple flyer and a van-side layout. A market stall needs a banner and product labels. These jobs are small, but they repeat — menus change, sales come around, prices update — and a shop that trusts you with one will call you for the next. Avoid competing for logo design for startups at the start; that market is crowded with spec work, while practical shop graphics are underserved.

Free design tools cover everything this market needs: layouts, text, colour, image editing and export for print and screen. Learn one tool properly rather than three superficially, and learn the fundamentals alongside it: hierarchy (the most important thing biggest), contrast (text readable against its background), alignment (nothing placed at random), and white space (room for the design to breathe). A free tutorial series on layout basics will improve your work more than any new tool, and it costs nothing but an evening.

Price per job, with the scope written down: one poster, two revision rounds, print-ready and social-size files included. Beginners often undercharge because a poster took only an hour, but the client is paying for the result and the years of looking that went into it, not the hour. Set a minimum fee so tiny jobs do not eat your week in messages, and charge extra for rush work and for extra revision rounds beyond the agreed two. As your portfolio grows, raise the minimum — your early prices were for learning, not for life.

Repeat work is the business. After delivering a job, note the client's next likely need — a seasonal menu, a holiday sale, a new service launch — and message them a week before it, with a concrete idea. Keep a simple client file with their colours, fonts and logo so the next job starts in minutes, not from scratch. Over a year, ten regular small clients ordering monthly will out-earn a constant churn of one-off jobs, and they will do it with far less pitching. Design skill gets you the first job; reliability and follow-up build the income.

Pick one local shop this week, redesign one item they actually use — a menu, a poster, a price list — and show it to them with a polite note. A concrete improvement to their own business is a stronger pitch than any portfolio page.
